GETTING AROUND THE CITY

The Streetcar
For those interested in sightseeing, the streetcar is a great option in nice weather. There are three streetcar lines serving the main areas in New Orleans: The Canal, Riverfront and St. Charles lines, each of which originates in downtown New Orleans and takes you to a different part of the city. The green cars of the St. Charles line run frequently from downtown (the French Quarter), up St. Charles Avenue to Uptown New Orleans, along that avenue’s “neutral ground,” the name for the landscaped medians that divide the traffic on the city’s grandest streets. Red cars on the Canal Street line terminate at historic cemeteries like Metairie Cemetery or City Park. The shorter Riverfront line takes passengers along the Mississippi river to the Quarter’s French Market. Streetcars arrive every 10 minutes on weekdays and every 15 minutes on weekends -- but it's the South, so be prepared for things to run charmingly slow and late.  The lines generally run from 6 am to 11 pm and cost $1.25 to ride (streetcars can not make change, so please have exact fare when you board).  You can also buy day/week passes.

Taxicabs
Please note that unlike other cities, taxis aren't always easy to find or hail -- especially outside of the French Quarter. Taxis can always be called to a location in advance. The best local option is United Cab (504.522.9771). Try to ignore the rudeness of the surly United Cab dispatchers.

Bicycle
New Orleans is a flat city and excellent for exploring the city by bicycle. Bikes can be rented at The American Bicycle Rental Company which is located in the French Quarter at 325 Burgundy Street. Visit www.americanbicyclerental.com or call 1.866.293.4037 for more information.
